"Early Resurgence"
New music this week from Hidden Resurgence, Venlo, 100 gecs, Keep Shelly in Athens and more
This week’s batch of great new music is thinner than usual as the year is off to a slow start and the turbulence of the past week hasn’t made it the best time to release new music. Already looking forward to next week’s crop, with a couple of track announcements that should make the next edition exciting. In the meantime, here’s a couple to munch on, with a 100 gecs remix of Linking and an excellent techno banger from Hidden Empire that takes the prize home.
--- Absolute Fave ---
Resurgence - Hidden Empire
The track of the week is a wild dance techno epic that grows menacing with time and refuses to give everything away at any time. It’s so effective in delivering in waves, adamant on distilling what it’s got to deliver in pockets to let the sweet poison get into every nook and cranny. A feat of power in restraint, Resurgence makes a compelling case for Hidden Empire’s upcoming Lost Spirits LP (due for release on Feb. 5).
--- other great tracks ---
right where you left me - Taylor Swift
An extra offering from the deluxe edition of Taylor’s second album of 2020, right where you left me fits right in the narrative of evermore. It’s one of the folksier tracks of the refreshed LP, even taking us back to a time where Romeo met Juliet and Taylor made a song about it. It’s also another helping of Taylor’s storybook-style writing, painting vivid images of lives imagined that feel hauntingly lived in by the past and the present.
Early - Keep Shelly In Athens
In a tumultuous 2021 (already…), Early by KSiA is the welcome antidote to a toxicity no one signed up for - yet nearly everyone seems to have received heavy samples of. It’s their best track in recent memory, indulging in an elegant crescendo that collapses in the form of crashing waves (that don’t actually crash as much as they quietly simmer down).
One Step Closer (100 gecs Reanimation) - Linkin Park
Another day, another creative 100 gecs chaotic confection. They say it’s a “reanimation” and indeed it feels like the song takes on a new life decades after its original release. Weirdly comforting that 100 gecs’ ability to dazzle and surprise is still amazingly fresh and reliable. Why does a revamping of a Linkin Park song by the Brady-Les duo feel so intimate?
Regarde - Venlo (feat. Caballero)
Nice French rap collaboration that taps into each of its actor’s strengths. There’s something extremely DIY about the song that makes it particularly endearing in an age where rap instrumentals range from expensive-sounding home-made loops to unimaginative patterns and a myriad of alternatives in between.
